To 1842 o βοτανολόγος Nathaniel Ward έγραψε ένα βιβλίο με τίτλο “On the Growth of closely glazed cases” https://www.doaks.org/resources/online-exhibits/botany-of-empire/plant-transportation/on-the-growth-of-plants-in-closely-glazed-cases όπου αφηγήθηκε την ιστορία του για την ενδιαφέρουσα ανακάλυψη του.Στα ενδιαφέροντα του ήταν η παρατήρηση των εντόμων και έτσι τοποθέτησε μια χρυσαλίδα μέσα σε ένα γυάλινο μπουκάλι, κλείνοντας το ερμητικά μ’ένα αυτοσχέδιο καλούπι.Ως μέρος της μελέτης του αποφάσισε να τοποθετήσει το μπουκάλι σε θέση όπου υπήρχε ηλιακό φως.Παρατήρησε οτι σχηματιζόταν υγρασία στην κορυφή του μπουκαλιού κατα τη διάρκεια της ημέρας που στη συνέχεια πήγαινε προς το χώμα στη βάση του μπουκαλιού.
Προς έκπληξή του μετά απο λίγες μέρες διαπίστωσε οτι μέσα στο μπουκάλι βλάστησε μια φτέρη κι ένα μικρό στέλεχος απο γρασίδι.Αυτά ήταν ακριβώς που προσπαθούσε να μεγαλώσει στον κήπο του, αλλά δεν τα κατάφερνε καλά.Ο Nathaniel σκέφτηκε οτι η ρύπανση απο τα τοπικά εργοστάσια είχαν επηρεάσει την ανάπτυξη των φυτών του στον κήπο. Ως εκ τούτου, τον έκανε να πιστέψει οτι τα φυτά μπορούν ν’αναπτυχθούν όταν προστατεύονται απο μολυσματικές ουσίες του περιβάλλοντος.Στη συνέχεια έβγαλε τη γυάλα έξω απο το παράθυρο και τα φυτά συνέχισαν να ευδοκιμούν σε αυτή για 4 χρόνια χωρίς καθόλου νερό. Τότε ήταν η στιγμή που ένα τερράριουμ γεννήθηκε.
Τα τερράριουμ διακρίνονται σε δυο τύπους:
ΚΛΕΙΣΤΟΥ ΤΥΠΟΥ -Το γυάλινο δοχείο έχει κάποιου είδους καπάκι που δεν επιτρέπει την είσοδο ή έξοδο του αέρα.Η επιλογή κλειστού ή ανοικτού τύπου είναι πολύ σημαντική κι εξαρτάται άμεσα το είδος των φυτών που τοποθετούμε σε αυτά.
Στα κλειστού τύπο τερράριουμ επιλέγουμε φυτά όπως οι φτέρες, οι πιλέες, οι φιτόνιες, οι πεπερόμιες καθώς και τα βρύα moss.Η φροντίδα τους είναι πιο απαιτητική και είναι πιο ευπαθή σε μολύνσεις απο τα ανοικτού τύπου.
ΑΝΟΙΚΤΟΥ ΤΥΠΟΥ
Στα ανοικτού τύπου τερράριουμ επιλέγονται φυτά που απαιτούν λίγο πότισμα όπως τα παχύφυτα και οι κάκτοι.Στο γυάλινο δοχείο δεν υπάρχει η απορροή της γλάστρας. Το χαλίκι στη βάση του και το ειδικό υπόστρωμα βοηθούν στη στράγγιση του νερού, που πρέπει να είναι ελάχιστο.
Τα παχύφυτα που συνήθως τοποθετούνται και ευδοκιμούν στα ανοικτού τύπου terrarium αποθηκεύουν νερό στα φύλλα τους,
κι έτσι δε χρειάζεται ο ψεκασμός σε αυτά, όπως στα κλειστά τερράριουμ.Άρα είναι ευκολότερη η συντήρηση τους απο έναν ιδιώτη και δεν απαιτούν εξειδικευμένες γνώσεις συντήρησης.Τολμήστε να προσθέσετε ένα terrarium στη διακόσμηση του χώρου σας κανοντας τη διαφορά.
